Can you drive into Illa de Arousa if you’re not a resident?

🛑 Over the past few weeks, many people have asked us whether they can drive into Illa de Arousa without being residents. The confusion arises from the recent implementation of a residential zone with traffic restrictions in the island’s town center. The answer is clear:

📅 Yes, you can drive into Illa de Arousa even if you are not a resident.

Here we explain simply and clearly what you need to know about this new regulation: how it works, which areas are affected, which remain open, and how to plan your visit to the island without worrying about fines or restrictions.

🚧 What exactly has been restricted?

Since June 15, 2025, the Concello of A Illa de Arousa has designated 45 streets in the urban center as a residential zone with restricted vehicle access. This measure is part of an initiative to improve local mobility, reduce tourist overcrowding, and protect the quality of life for residents.

This means that only the following people or vehicles are allowed to drive through those streets:

  • Registered residents

  • Owners of second homes (with prior authorization)

  • Emergency or delivery services

  • Clients of accommodations or businesses who submit their license plate details in advance

Access is monitored by license plate recognition cameras. If you enter the area without authorization, you may be fined up to €200.

🚗 Can I drive onto the island if I’m not a resident?

Yes. Driving onto the island is completely allowed. The restrictions apply only to a specific part of the town center—not the entire island. Therefore, anyone can:

  • Cross the bridge connecting the island to the mainland

  • Drive on most roads around the island

  • Visit tourist attractions and local points of interest without penalty

🚦 Unrestricted access zones:

Area Accessibility
Port of O Cabodeiro ✅ No restriction
Port of Xufre ✅ No restriction
Beaches (Area da Secada, etc.) ✅ No restriction
Public parking areas ✅ Outside restricted zone
Educational and sports centers ✅ Open access
Green areas and coastal paths ✅ Open access

⚠️ What if I’m staying or visiting a place within the restricted zone?

If your accommodation or restaurant is located within the restricted area, you may still access it by car—as long as your license plate is registered in advance with the Concello. For example, if you’re staying at the guesthouse Casa do Mar or dining at O Chícharo restaurant, just ask them to register your vehicle. Each property or business may request up to five monthly access authorizations without justification.

Tourist accommodations and local businesses have access to the license plate registration system, so we recommend contacting them before your arrival to avoid any unexpected fines.

⛵️ What if I’ve booked an activity with Amare?

At Amare Turismo Náutico, our boat tours depart from the port of O Cabodeiro, which is located outside the restricted zone. You can drive there easily, park nearby, and enjoy the experience without worrying about the local traffic regulations.
